Nisan 13 – Quiet Betrayal, Final Preparations
Disciples prepare Passover. Judas conspires. The shadow of sacrifice falls.
(Monday evening to Tuesday evening)
The sun set on another day, and with it began Nisan 13—the day before Passover. Unlike the confrontations of Nisan 11and the prophetic parables of Nisan 12, this day began in silence. The Lamb had been inspected. The religious leaders had been exposed. Now came a solemn calm before the storm.
A Day of Stillness, A Night of Scheming
While Yeshua remained in Bethany, just outside Jerusalem, a different kind of activity stirred in the city.
The chief priests and elders gathered in secret, finalizing their plan to arrest Him—but not during the feast, fearing a riot among the people. Still, the betrayal they hoped for came to them:
“Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, ‘What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?’”
— Matthew 26:14–16
Thirty pieces of silver—the price of a slave (cf. Exodus 21:32). That was the value placed on the Son of God.
From that moment, Judas looked for an opportunity to betray Him in secret. Luke 22:3–6 notes that Satan entered him, shifting betrayal from intention to action.
Preparing the Passover
While betrayal brewed in the shadows, Yeshua made preparations in the light.
That afternoon, He sent Peter and John into Jerusalem:
“Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.”
— Luke 22:8
They would meet a man carrying a jar of water—a task normally done by women, making the moment stand out. He would lead them to a house with an upper room, already furnished.
This was no coincidence. It was divine orchestration. The Passover was about to be fulfilled in ways none of them fully understood, but Yeshua knew the appointed time.
“My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover with my disciples…”
— Matthew 26:18
The Last Quiet Moments
Scripture records no public teaching from Yeshua on this day. It was likely a time of quiet reflection, prayer, and instruction. Perhaps He spent these final hours strengthening His disciples, or communing with His Father in stillness.
Soon the time would come for:
A final meal,
A garden of anguish,
A kiss of betrayal,
And the sacrifice of the Lamb.
But for now, the day closed in silence.
What Nisan 13 Reveals
Yeshua remained in Bethany during the day (quiet before the storm).
Judas betrayed Him for thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12–13 foretold it).
The disciples prepared the Passover in a prearranged upper room.
Yeshua’s obedience remained exact—fulfilling the moedim down to the hour.
